Key West, Florida is home to some incredible inshore fishing. While many anglers come here to experience the offshore fishing in this area, you can find some very good fishing close to shore as well. Fish the backcountry waters or out in the bay for a variety of fish species.
Backcountry Fishing
The backcountry is the water that runs along the Florida Keys island chain. If you are staying around land along the Florida Keys, you are fishing backcountry waters. These waters provide good fishing for a variety of species on flats, near the mangroves, in canals, around channels and cuts.
Around Key West, Florida, there are some awesome backcountry waters to fish that most people never will see on their trip to Key West. There are many fishing guides and charters that fish these areas. There is some excellent fishing around the mangroves, in the channels, around the bridges and on the flats. A variety of fish are caught in the backcountry waters such as barracuda, snapper, snook, sheepshead, redfish, permit and more.
Bridge Fishing
Key West is not the place to go in the Keys if you are looking for bridges to fish from shore, however, if you are in a boat, there are several really good places to fish around bridges. The tidal changes provide some very good fishing as water moves underneath the bridges, which triggers many fish into feeding.
Flats Fishing
There are some awesome flats fishing opportunities in the area as well. Anglers usually target permit, barracuda and bonefish on the flats, but you can find a variety of other species here too.
