Burt Lake is popular lake for fishing and boating. The lake is over 17,000 acres and has a very diverse fish population. Anglers target walleye, muskie, northern pike, smallmouth bass, trout and perch.
This Lake is Huge
Burt lake is a huge lake and the best fishing usually occurs offshore, so you’re going to need a good-sized boat if the wind is blowing because the waves will pickup out here. Make sure to bring some good maps and/or electronics to help you find schools of baitfish which will help you find the fish that you want to catch. There is a lot of water out here and the fish move around a lot in the summer months.
The Water is Very Clear
Burt Lake has very good water clarity, which helps make it a beautiful lake, however, this also makes the fishing challenging at times, especially for people that are new to the lake. Fishing during low light conditions helps and going with lighter line and fluorocarbon leaders can help you catch more fish.
Deep Water Fishing
Burt Lake has a lot of deep water to fish and there are some really good fish that swim the deeper waters of the lake. Whether you are fishing for walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike or trout, you may experience some of the best fishing between 20 to 40 feet of water during the summer months. For anglers that aren’t used to fishing deeper, they will need to trust their electronics and learn to find baitfish out in deeper water. There are a lot of big fish that will suspend above the thermocline during the summer months.
Fish the Bays
There are several bays on the lake and the fishing can be very good in the bays. Early in the season, fish will move into these bays to spawn. Depending on the bay, you’re going to find some vegetation, rocks and some nice flats that hold some nice fish in the spring. You will find some absolutely huge smallmouth bass in the bays during the spring. Find some vegetation and you’ll find some perch, northern pike and even some walleye early in the year.
Fish the Points
There are some major points on the lake and these big pieces of structure will hold a variety of fish from spring through fall. Anglers like to troll the drop-offs off these points for walleye and trout, but you’ll also find smallmouth bass, perch and pike here too.
Fish the Rocks
There is a lot of rock in Burt Lake. Smallmouth bass are found around the rocks and you can find some absolute giants if you get out here and fish the flats during the bass spawning season. The deeper rocks and humps will hold smallmouth bass, walleye, pike and other fish too.
Fish the Weeds
There is not a lot of vegetation in the lake, but there is some. You can usually find some bass, walleye, pike and panfish around the weeds in the bay early in the season. Deeper weeds will hold some fish too, however, most of the lake will not have any vegetation to fish.
