Flounder are bottom-dwelling ambush predators that are commonly caught inshore and nearshore throughout the Homosassa area. These flatfish bury themselves in sand or mud and strike passing bait with surprising speed. While often a secondary target, they are prized for their table fare and show up most often in the cooler months around creeks, oyster bars, and sandy drop-offs.


Where to Catch Flounder


In the Homosassa area, flounder are typically found around:

Sandy and muddy bottoms near creek mouths and tidal ditches

Edges of oyster bars and deep grass flats with current

Nearshore rock piles and ledges close to the shoreline

Potholes and drop-offs within inshore bays and channels

Tackle & Tips


Lures: Soft plastic jigs, bucktails, and scented baits dragged slowly along the bottom

Bait: Live mud minnows, finger mullet, or shrimp on jigheads or Carolina rigs

Leaders: 15–20 lb fluorocarbon leader for abrasion resistance

Technique: Keep bait on the bottom and wait a few seconds before setting the hook after a bite
