Fish During Low Light Conditions
Chautauqua Lake has very clear water, which makes the walleye fishing more difficult for many anglers. Fishing during low light conditions is key to consistently catching better numbers of walleye. Fish early in the morning, in the evening at night or on overcast days and the fishing is usually much better for walleye.
Fish the Deeper Water
With the clear water, you will most likely have to fish deeper here especially if you are fishing the middle of the day during the summer. You may find some walleye in the shallows at night, early in the morning and in the evening, but for the most part, fish deeper and you’ll do better here. Fish the drop-offs and don’t rule out trolling the open waters for suspended walleye too.
Fish the Points
The major points are good spots to fish for a variety of fish here. Walleye will be found roaming these points too. Fish the deeper water near these points and at times, you may find some walleye feeding shallower early in the morning, late in the evening and at night.
Fish the Creek Mouths
The deeper water near the creek mouths are good spots to find walleye, especially after a hard rain. These creek mouths will usually attract bait fish and walleye will move into these areas to feed as well.
Fish the Weeds
The lake has miles of weed lines and perch are often found around these weeds. Walleye will patrol the deeper weed lines in search of an easy meal.
