Sea bass inhabit irregular hard-bottom areas, such as wrecks or reefs. They are found from on the east coast from Massachusetts to Cape Canaveral, Florida. They are found inshore and nearshore. Juvenile fish are common in the high-salinity areas of the estuaries during the summer.

Black Sea Bass are often found around the nearshore and offshore reefs and wrecks in the waters around the Clearwater / St. Pete Beach, Florida area. Most of the offshore fishing charters will head 10 to 20 miles offshore and further to target the bottom structures for a variety of fish. Anglers usually catch them while bottom fishing for grouper and snapper in this area.
