Triggerfish are found in the same type of habitat as red snapper. They feed on crabs, shrimp, sand dollars, sea urchins and mollusks. Anglers usually catch them on squid or cut bait, but triggerfish are also a popular fish for spearfishing.
Triggerfish Fishing in the Cedar Key, Florida Area
Triggerfish can be found around the offshore bottom structure in this area. The waters around Cedar Key are very shallow, so it is a decent boat ride out to deeper water. However, for the charters that do go out to 100 feet of water and deeper, they will find some triggerfish while targeting grouper and snapper on the reefs and wrecks.
Triggerfish Fishing Tips
Triggerfish are notorious bait stealers and often frustrate anglers that are fishing for snapper and grouper. Triggerfish have a hard, bony mouth, so you need to make sure you’re using a small, but very strong, sharp hook.
