Whiting are a smaller, slender fish that is usually targeted on the beaches. They can often be found in very shallow water just inside or outside of where the waves are crashing on the beach. Most fish are under a pound, but catching them in the 1 to 2 pound range is possible on many beaches.
Whiting Fishing in the Bradenton, FL Area
Whiting are common in the surf of the Anna Maria Island & Longboat Key beaches. This area is full of beaches, so you have plenty of places to fish for them. On some of the beaches, you will deal with crowds during the summer tourist season, so you may have to get out early in the morning or fish later in the evening to avoid the swimmers.
Whiting Fishing Tips
Use smaller baits if you want to consistently hook a whiting. Live and cut baits work great with shrimp being the favorite bait for most anglers. Make sure to use smaller hooks, but you don’t want to go too light with your rod and reel. In the surf, you will need some heavier line and a good-sized rod and reel still since you will deal with the crashing waves, current and potentially some bigger fish that may take your baits as well.
