Saltwater Catfish

Saltwater Catfish Fishing in Bradenton, Florida

Saltwater catfish, mainly hardhead and gafftopsail catfish, are very common in the Bradenton area and often caught by anglers fishing with bait from piers, beaches, or boats. While not typically targeted due to their slimy texture and sharp spines, they put up a decent fight and are often caught while fishing for other species like redfish, snook, or trout. Gafftopsail catfish are considered better table fare than hardheads, though most anglers still release them.

Where to Catch Saltwater Catfish

Saltwater catfish are found throughout the Bradenton area:

Near bridges, piers, and docks

On grass flats, muddy bottom bays, and estuaries

In the surf zone along beaches, especially near bait

They are opportunistic feeders and will bite on a variety of baits, especially when fishing the bottom in slower-moving water.
