Saltwater catfish are commonly encountered by anglers fishing the Apalachicola Bay and surrounding Gulf waters. While not typically targeted, they are often caught incidentally while bottom fishing. Two main types are found in these waters — gafftopsail catfish and hardhead catfish. Though slimy and underrated, they fight hard and are abundant year-round.


Where to Catch Saltwater Catfish


Saltwater catfish are frequently found:

In bays, sounds, and estuaries with muddy or sandy bottoms

Around piers, docks, and nearshore structure

At river mouths and tidal outflows

They feed on the bottom and scavenge a wide range of baits
