Fishing for Pelagic Fish

What are Pelagic Fish?
Pelagic fish get their name from the area that they inhabit called the pelagic zone. The pelagic zone is the largest habitat on earth with a volume of 330 million cubic miles. Different species of pelagic fish are found throughout this zone. Numbers and distributions vary regionally and vertically, depending on availability of light, nutrients, dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity, and pressure.

Some of the pelagic species of fish that show up in this area during the summer are tuna, king mackerel, marlin, mahi mahi and sailfish.  However, it is a 75 to 100 mile boat ride out to the deeper waters from Mexico Beach, Florida, so while anglers do fish offshore here, there aren’t many charters who go far enough out to target the pelagic species.

Bottom Fishing

Reefs & Wrecks

The Mexico Beach area has so many good fishing spots nearshore and offshore due to the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association (MBARA).  They do an amazing job at bringing more fish into this area, so anglers do not have to venture way off shore to find quality fish to catch.  Take a look at their website to learn more about the reefs and wrecks to fish in this area.

Some of the types of fish you may be targeting on the reefs and wrecks are snapper, grouper, king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, amberjack, cobia, sharks, hogfish, tripletail, jack crevalle, barracuda and more.
