Welcome to our Houghton Lake Area Fishing Home Page
Houghton Lake is a town situated on the southwest shore of Houghton Lake, Michigan’s largest inland lake. Higgins Lake is close by and there are some other smaller lakes located in this area as well. If you’re looking for some multi-species inland lakes to fish in Michigan, this is a good area to visit. It’s a nice family vacation destination in a beautiful area of Michigan.
Primary Species of Fish
Walleye, Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Trout & Panfish
The 3 major lakes in this area offer anglers a little bit of everything. This area isn’t known as an area for huge numbers of walleye or huge pike or smallmouth bass, but it is a very good multi-species fishery. On Houghton Lake, anglers usually fish for walleye, but typically end up with more northern pike, bluegill and bass than walleye. There is a fishable population of walleye in the lake too though. On Higgins Lake, anglers fish for lake trout and rainbow trout primarily, but smallmouth bass, pike and panfish are here too. Lake St. Helen is much smaller than the other two lakes, but it offers anglers some very good fishing for largemouth bass with some big fish available too. Northern pike and bluegill are here in good numbers too with a limited smallmouth bass and walleye population.
