Fishing Line Recommendations

Cutthroat trout are mostly found in clear water lakes, streams and rivers.  When fishing for them, most anglers go with lighter gear.  You may be using line in the 2 to 6 pound range. As a general rule, the lighter you go, the more bites you will get, however, you do have to factor in hook sets, if you are fishing around any snags and if there are any big fish in the water you’re fishing.  You may have to go heavier.  Some anglers will use heavier line in lakes, especially if they are trolling.  10 to 20 pound fluorocarbon line may be needed when going with heavier tackle or when trolling.  The fluorocarbon is almost invisible under water, so when you go heavier, we recommend using fluorocarbon.  For fly fishing line, take a look here for a Basic Fly Fishing Setup for Cutthroat Trout.
