Fishing the Brainerd, MN area in the Spring

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
March 38° / 15°
April 54° / 29°
May 68° / 42°

The spring is an awesome time to fish the Brainerd area.  Fish the smaller lakes and the lakes with murkier water early in the year as those waters will warm faster and bring better action.  Once the water starts to warm in late spring and early summer, the rest of the lakes will catch on fire and you have so many options for largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye and panfish.

Fishing the Brainerd, MN area in the Summer

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
June 76° / 52°
July 81° / 57°
August 79° / 54°

The summer gives you a lot of options.  The weed lines will set in on the area lakes and you can usually just fish the weed edges all summer long and do well for walleye, bass, pike and panfish.  Some of the lakes will get a lot of traffic from the pleasure boaters, so plan on fishing early morning and late evening to avoid them.  You can also hit up some of the smaller lakes in the area if you need to get away from the pleasure boaters.

Fishing the Brainerd, MN area in the Fall

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
September 69° / 45°
October 56° / 33°
November 38° / 20°

In the fall, some of the popular lakes will have a lot less boat traffic on them, so you get a little more time on the water without some of the summer craziness.  You have so many options here that you can catch fish all the way through the end of the fall.  Early fall is great for largemouth bass, while the middle to end of fall still offers good fishing for walleye, perch, crappie, bluegill and northern pike.

Fishing the Brainerd, MN area in the Winter (Ice Fishing)

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
December 24° / 5°
January 19° / -5°
February 26° / 0°

There are a lot of lakes to ice fish in the area and many of them have good populations of panfish and pike with some being very good for walleye too.  These fish will eat through the winter, so get out and fish if you like to go ice fishing.
