Area Waters

Madison River

The Madison River is a phenomenal river for fishing and a very diverse fishery.  There are many different sections of this river as it winds from the Yellowstone Park through several different lakes, through the valley and eventually will join the Gallatin and Jefferson Rivers.  The area you’re fishing will dictate the type of fishing you will experience, however, the river is known for having a very good fishery for brown trout and rainbow trout.  Whitefish are available too in some stretches.

Missouri River

This is the river people go to if they are looking for a big fish.  The Missouri River has so many fish swimming in it that you can catch good numbers of them with the average size a lot bigger than most of the other rivers and some big fish are considered common here.  Rainbow trout and brown trout are both here.

Henry’s Fork of the Snake River

This stretch of river is a very diverse fishery.  Anglers get to fish a variety of water from flat water to fast moving canyon water.  It’s a beautiful river with some excellent fishing.  It is known as a tremendous rainbow trout fishery with some big, beautiful brown trout mixed in too.

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is huge and offers some pristine outdoor recreational opportunities.  People come visit this park from all over the country.  More people come here to just see the sights than to fish, but for the anglers, there is a lot here for you.  Plan on doing some research.  Get some maps, know the regulations and make sure you have an idea what you are doing here, so you can experience some good trout fishing while also having a safe trip here.  The ponds, lakes and rivers here will all most likely have some type of trout in them.  Some spots will be better than others.  Happy exploring if you decide to come here to do some fishing.

Yellowstone River

The Yellowstone River is a big river that flows through Yellowstone National Park and out of the park as well.  It is a huge river that flows for close to 700 miles.  In the park, anglers usually report better fishing, however, there are plenty of trout that can be found in the waters that are outside of the park.  Float trips are popular ways to fish these waters outside of the park.  It’s big water and you need to be careful on this river.  The Yellowstone River flows near several towns, so you have the option to fish this river from several different areas.  Anglers target cutthroat trout, brown trout and rainbow trout.  There are some big fish in this river too.

Hebgen Lake

Hebgen Lake is another option for anglers in this area.  The lake is a popular spot for boating, fishing and camping.  Anglers target brown trout, cutthroat trout and rainbow trout too.
