Take a look at the best live and natural baits that are used for catching crappie.

Using Minnows for Crappie

MinnowsMinnows are probably the best live bait for catching crappie.  Minnows in the 3 to 4 inch range will work well and you can go a little bigger if you are fishing on lakes that have good populations of bigger crappie in the 12 to 15 inch range.  Fathead minnows and smaller shiner minnows will catch plenty of crappie.

Using Wax Worms for Crappie

wax-worms2Wax Worms work well for crappie.  Tip your favorite soft plastics and hair jigs and you should be able to put some crappie in the boat.  Some anglers just tip an ice fishing jig with a wax worm and that works great too.

Using Leeches for Crappie

Crappie can be caught on leeches, but most anglers usually don’t use leeches for crappie.  If you are going to use leeches for crappie, the smaller leeches typically work better.  Some anglers do have success by tipping their jigs with small pieces of leeches.  You may catch some crappie on leeches, but you will probably catch a lot more crappie if you use minnows instead.

Using Nightcrawlers for Crappie

Many anglers wonder if nightcrawlers will work for catching crappie.  Typically, nightcrawlers are not a crappie bait, especially if you fish with a whole nightcrawler.  Some anglers do have some success with a piece of a nightcrawler added to the back of a small jig.  The jig is what typically attracts the crappie and the added scent from the broken worm may help draw some additional strikes.  In most situations, you will catch many more crappie by fishing with small minnows instead of worms.  Wax worms do work well when tipped on jigs, but wax worms are completely different from nightcrawlers.
