Walleye


This is an awesome walleye destination.  Hit it right and you can catch 50 to 100 walleye per day with some big fish mixed in too.  Fish Pickle Lake or Lake St. Joseph and you will catch plenty of fish.  Do a fly-in trip and the fishing can be outstanding and you may not see anyone else fishing your lake.  It’s a great walleye destination if you want to catch a lot of fish.


Lake St. Joseph


Lake St. Joseph is an incredible walleye lake.  Anglers can catch so many walleye in so many different places.  It is a huge lake that offers current, bays, points, rocky shorelines, weeds, islands and more offshore structure than you can fish in a lifetime.  It’s a numbers lake with lots of big fish too.  It is one of the better drive-to lakes in Ontario for walleye fishing.


Pickle Lake


Pickle Lake is an awesome walleye lake.  Known more for its numbers than for trophy walleye, you can catch some big walleye, but you’re going to have to sort through lots of walleye in the 15 to 18 inch range.  It’s an unbelievable walleye lake if you want to catch a lot of fish.  Also, due to its smaller size, it’s fairly easy to find walleye that are willing to eat.  Fish the shorelines early in the year and then move out to the islands and offshore rock structures from summer through fall.


Other Area Lakes & Rivers


There are plenty of other places to fish in this area if you want to go exploring.  The town of Pickle Lake put in boat launches at Mud Lake (Badesdwa), Menako Lake, Pipestone River and Mawley Lake.  There are several fly-in fishing outposts that also offer some excellent walleye fishing in the area.


Best Baits for Walleye


Walleye eat a variety of different baits, however, when push comes to shove, it is much easier to catch them with live baits.  Minnowsnightcrawlers and leeches are definitely the best live baits for walleye.

While most anglers will just use live baits, many anglers will also target walleye with lures as well.  Crankbaits and soft plastics are the best lures for walleye, however, you can catch walleye with a variety of different lures.
