Fishing St Augustine, Florida in the Spring

Month Avg. Air Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
March 74° / 54°
April 79° / 59°
May 84° / 66°

While the spring brings warmer weather into the area, there will still be some colder weather early in the spring in this part of Florida.  Cold fronts can definitely affect the fishing negatively.  As the warm fronts move through, water temperatures rise and bring more bait into the inshore waters.  As the weather warms up through the spring, more of the migratory species will be found in the area waters.  Anglers catch redfish, sea trout, flounder and black drum throughout the inshore waters.  The inlet gives anglers a chance to catch so many different species such as the ones already listed plus bluefish, cobia, sharks, Spanish mackerel, snook and tarpon.  Along the beaches, anglers catch a lot of whiting.  Offshore, anglers catch a variety of fish such as kingfish, barracuda, tuna, grouper, snapper and more.

In the summer, you can catch so many different fish.  Inshore, expect to see the usual redfish, sea trout, flounder, black drum and some sheepshead to go along with bluefish, Spanish mackerel, tarpon, snook and sharks.  Many fishing charters head out of the St. Augustine Inlet as they head out to target a variety of fish nearshore and offshore.  Some of the popular fish are amberjack, grouper, snapper, mahi mahi, cobia, wahoo, sharks, bluefish, Spanish mackerel and more.

Fishing St Augustine, Florida in the Fall

In the fall, the mullet run gets into full swing as these fish move down the United States’ eastern coastline and into Florida.  The bigger fish will follow these mullet along the beaches as well as into the inlet and back into the rivers.  When the mullet show up, you can experience some of the best fishing of the year.  From early to mid fall, you will see lots of migratory fish and resident fish gorging themselves on all of the bait that moves into the area.   As the water temperatures continue to drop later in the fall, you will find a lot less migratory fish, so if you are coming here later in the fall, the main species of inshore fish will be redfish, sea trout, flounder and sheepshead.  Fishing near the St. Augustine Inlet is very popular in the fall since huge numbers of fish will move in and out of this area through that inlet.

Offshore, there are a lot less people going out offshore now that the summer crowds are gone, however, the boats that do go out will be able to target sailfish, swordfish, mahi mahi, marlin, tuna, grouper, snapper, triggerfish, porgy, sharks and more.

Fishing St Augustine, Florida in the Winter

Month Avg. Air Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
December 69° / 50°
January 67° / 46°
February 69° / 48°

The winter fishing can still be very good in this area due to the amount of inshore waters to fish.  The rivers provide an excellent home to so many fish during the colder months of the year.  Sheepshead move back inshore in large numbers.  Cold fronts can make fishing tough during the winter, but in between cold fronts, anglers can usually do well with redfish, sea trout and flounder to go along with the sheepshead.  Offshore, the charter boats still do target a variety of fish including mahi mahi, swordfish, sailfish, tuna, grouper and snapper.
