Northern pike can get very big and they are very strong, so we recommend using 20 to 30 pound fishing line with a 40 to 50 pound mono or fluorocarbon leader to prevent bite-offs from their sharp teeth. You can also go with a steel leader as well to prevent bite-offs. If you are fishing an action lake or river that doesn’t have much trophy potential, you could use 10 to 14 pound line, but you still will need a leader to prevent bite-offs.
