Fishing Lake Simcoe in the Spring
Month | Avg. Air Temps °F (Hi/Lo) |
March | 36° / 19° |
April | 48° / 33° |
May | 62° / 46° |
In the spring, the waters warm a little slower here compared to other lakes in this region because the water is so clear and deep. There are parts of the lake that do warm up sooner though, so target the bays, shorelines or the Holland River if you want to find some of the warmer water temperatures. Because the bass opener opens so late in this region, anglers are usually targeting perch, crappie, lake trout and northern pike. As always with Lake Simcoe, the perch get most of the attention, but early in the spring provides some of the best fishing for crappie here and some very good pike and lake trout fishing in shallower water than you will find them in the summer.
Fishing Lake Simcoe in the Summer
Month | Avg. Air Temps °F (Hi/Lo) |
June | 72° / 56° |
July | 76° / 61° |
August | 75° / 60° |
When the bass opener arrives, you will see lots of anglers on this water to target the bass. There are still plenty of perch anglers on the water, but you can catch some absolute giant smallmouth bass fairly shallow still and the largemouth bass fishing is good too. As summer patterns set in here during the month of July, you can still find some bass shallower, but the better bite for all species of fish tends to move deeper. For lake trout and bigger northern pike, it can be in very deep water. For largemouth bass, the better bite may be in the 10 to 15 foot range on the deeper weed lines. For smallmouth bass and perch, you may be fishing 20 to 30 feet of water at times.
Fishing Lake Simcoe in the Fall
Month | Avg. Air Temps °F (Hi/Lo) |
September | 69° / 53° |
October | 55° / 42° |
November | 43° / 31° |
The fall brings some fish back into the shallows as water temperatures drop into the low 60s, but as fall progresses, most fish will head out to deeper waters as they school up and put on the feedbag to prepare for winter. At times, it can be difficult locating some of these deep water fish, but once you get on a good school of them, you can catch some absolutely huge smallmouth bass and perch as they gorge on minnows all fall. As water temperatures drop into the lower 50s, you may find some big pike and lake trout fairly shallow at times.

February | 27° / 10° |
Winter on Lake Simcoe is unlike pretty much every other lake in Canada. Ice fishing is so popular here that you are going to see so many anglers here all winter long. Even with all the pressure, Lake Simcoe puts out some serious numbers of fish and trophy perch, northern pike, some nice crappie, sunfish, whitefish and lake trout through the ice.
