Black Lake is a good-sized lake covering more than 10,000 acres. It has a good mixture of shallow and deep water with it maxing out around 50 feet deep. Black Lake does not get as much attention as nearby Burt and Mullet Lakes, however, it is a good fishing lake for a variety of fish species. Walleye have been stocked in the lake to make up for the lack of natural reproduction in the lake. Northern pike are here in good numbers with some big fish available too. Anglers can target muskie here. You have to sort through the smaller perch to find the bigger ones, but there are plenty of perch if you’re looking for some action. Black Lake is also home to some good sturgeon fishing, however, the sturgeon fishing season might not even last a few hours because they only let anglers catch a small number of them.
The Water is Clear
This lake has clear water, which is great for sight fishing smallmouth bass when they are on the flats in the spring / early summer, however, the clear water can make fishing tougher as well. You may need to go with some lighter line and a fluorocarbon leader to get more bites. Fishing during low light conditions will usually help you get more fish to bite as well.
Fish the Drop-offs
Black Lake has a lot of shallow water that extends quite a ways out from the shorelines. The drop-offs occur farther out from the shoreline, but with how flat the shallows are, this lake does have tons of awesome areas with nice drop-offs. These drop-offs are great spots to search for fish when the fish are not up on the flats in the shallows. Whether you are targeting smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye or perch, the drop-offs are great spots to fish from spring through fall.
Fish the Flats
There are huge flats on this lake and in the spring / early summer, you are going to find plenty of anglers roaming these flats as they sight fish for smallmouth bass. Other fish will move onto these flats as well. Black Lake does have a good amount of vegetation in it, so shallow weeds on the flats are great spots to fish early in the year.
Fish the Rocks
There are plenty of rocks in Black Lake and you will usually find some smallmouth bass around the rocks. Walleye, perch and pike can be found around the rocks as well.
Fish the Weeds
Compared to the other popular nearby lakes, Black Lake has a lot more vegetation in it, which is great for anglers who like to target northern pike. You can also find smallmouth bass, walleye and perch around the weeds as well. Deeper weeds are going to hold a lot more quality fish.
