How the Wind Affects Smallmouth Bass
Wind usually helps to improve fishing. Many smallmouth bass
fishermen prefer a slight chop on the water. This creates a
disturbance on the water making it tough for bass to see what's above
the surface. The sun doesn't penetrate as deep and the bass will
remain in shallower water for a longer period of time.
During very windy days, fishing can still be great, but it might be too
hard to control the boat and stay in good spots, which makes fishing
tough. In smaller lakes, heavy wind can stir up the bottom and dirty
the water. Visibility will be poor and the bass won't be very active until
the water clears up. Rivers and streams aren't affected too much by
wind. Most anglers couldn't even tell you if it was windy or not while
they were fishing rivers or streams. Most rivers and streams are
protected fairly well and this helps to block the wind. Good river and
stream fishermen know that it's about the current, not the wind.
