| Finding Stream Trout in Lakes There are numerous cold water lakes that provide some excellent trout fishing. Some lakes have the luxury of tributary streams where trout continue to reproduce year after year. Most trout can’t reproduce in reservoirs and lakes, which means they must be re-stocked year after year for healthy populations of trout. Some lakes stock trout 2 or 3 times per year or more to keep the populations up. In warmer lakes, few trout survive through the summer, so they must be stocked yearly. over the shorelines. The water is cool enough for the trout to stay shallow and they will stay shallow until the water warms up. Temperature is the biggest factor for finding trout in lakes. As soon as the water warms up, look for trout in deeper water. Until then, fish along the shoreline, inlets, rock bars, and sunken islands. In mid- summer look for trout along the thermocline in 20 to 30 feet of water. This will be the only area that has enough oxygen for them to survive through the summer. In the fall, you can find trout in the shallows again. In some warmer lakes, few trout survive the summer which makes the fall a tough time for fishing. It’s tough to catch a fish that doesn’t exist. |
