There are Atlantic and Pacific permit, however, the Atlantic permit is the larger species. The Atlantic permit can grow up to 50 pounds and the Pacific permit can grow up to 20
pounds. Permit are found in great numbers from south Florida to the Bahamas. Southern California has good populations of permit also because it is a warm water species.
Catching Permit
Permit are mostly targeted on the flats. You can usually see the tails of these fish just above the surface as they are feeding on the bottom. During a flooding tide, permit can be found all over the flats feeding on shrimp and crabs. Fishermen wade in the shallow as well as fishing from a flats boat. Shrimp and crabs are all you need for bait, but make sure to take the pinchers off the crabs. Jigs that resemble a crab will also work for permit, but most fishermen prefer using natural baits.
You can also find permit in deeper water in channels along the flats and around offshore areas such as wrecks and reefs. Chumming is the best way to catch permit in these areas. Most anglers enjoy catching these fish so much that they will release these fish immediately.
