Grouper
With more than 400 species of grouper in the world, they are typically found in similar areas and caught with the same techniques. The different
species of grouper usually vary little from species to species making it tough to identify them. They can be found along the bottom in deep water. Grouper feed off the bottom. Catching Grouper Some grouper can be caught inshore; however, most of these fish are caught in offshore waters. Heavy line and tackle is required because light line will easily cut around the sharp bottom where these fish are found. A bottom rig fished with live bait is usually all you need to catch grouper. Some anglers use cut bait and that also works. Leadhead jigs in the 1 to 3 ounce range with plastic tails and bucktail skirts will entice many strikes. When you set the hook on a grouper, you have to get them off the bottom as quick as you can to avoid the sharp bottom that can cut your line. Grouper are delicious; a favorite of many fishermen.
