Dolphin Fish (Mahi Mahi)
The mahi-mahi (in Hawaiian) is also known as dolphin-fish or dorado, calitos, maverikos, or lampuki (in Maltese).
They are surface-dwelling ray-finned fish that are found in off-shore temperate, tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. These fish are blue with yellow on their sides and belly. They also have areas of green on their back. Dolphin fish are found worldwide in warm ocean waters. These fish can grow to more than 70 pounds. They are often caught by accident by anglers trolling for marlin and tuna. Catching Dolphin Most are caught by accident fishing for other types of fish; however, some anglers do go out and target these fish. They can be caught trolling with rigged balao or mullet and also with high-speed trolling lures such as strip baits, trolling feathers and kona heads. Some fishermen prefer casting for these fish. Weed lines are excellent spots to cast for dolphin. Small leadhead jigs with plastic tails or bucktail skirts will work along the weed edges. Work these jigs back with an irregular jigging action. It drives dolphin crazy. Other lures that are good for casting are small swimming plugs, darters and poppers.
