Codfish
The codfish can be found from Hatteras to Greenland, although, it is most often targeted by anglers from the Delmarva ports north to Maine. They are mostly
an offshore fish, but they can be found inshore at times. Codfish are bottom-feeders, but they will also come up to feed on mackerel, herring, shrimp, squid and other forage. Catching Codfish Natural baits fished on the bottom are the preferred way to catch codfish. Medium tackle is usually sufficient for these fish. Sinker weights from 8 to 20 ounces will hold the bait on the bottom. Party boats and charter boats are responsible for the majority of codfish catches. At times, people will use jigs weighing as much as 8 to 16 ounces for codfish. When you find fish up off the bottom on your fishfinder, jigs are preferred to live bait. These fish are coming off the bottom to feed and they will be more aggressive. They are fun to catch and they taste excellent.
