Salmon & Trout Fishing

St. Joseph, Michigan offers some good salmon and trout fishing out of this port.  Anglers target chinook salmon, coho salmon, lake trout, steelhead and brown trout in the waters of Lake Michigan.  You will find plenty of charters that operate out of St. Joseph to help you plan a trip.  This area is unique because it offers anglers some excellent fishing on the St. Joseph river as well as Lake Michigan.  Anglers target steelhead, coho salmon, chinook salmon and smallmouth bass on the St. Joseph River.

Smallmouth Bass Fishing

The smallmouth bass fishing can be very good on the St. Joseph River.  Anglers love targeting smallies from May through September on the river.  There are good numbers of fish to be caught with plenty of big fish available too.  You may also find some good smallmouth bass fishing on Lake Michigan.  Most anglers don’t target smallmouth bass on the lake in this area as salmon and trout are the preferred species of fish, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some nice smallmouth bass to be found out here.

Perch Fishing

Perch fishing can be very good on Lake Michigan.  Most anglers report better success farther offshore than around the shorelines.  If you can find the schools of perch, you may end up catching some nice jumbo-sized fish.

St. Joseph River

The St. Joseph River is one of the finest rivers for targeting steelhead in the midwest.  You will start to see steelhead start to run into the river in the summer and there are good numbers of fish here from fall through winter as well.  Smallmouth bass are fun to catch and there are plenty of them in the river to go along with some nice-sized fish too.  You will find plenty of anglers targeting smallmouth bass on the river from May through September.  In the fall, coho and chinook run up the river and this gives anglers a lot more fish to target in the river.  Northern pike are found in good numbers too with some big fish available.  The better waters to fish for them are the upper part of the system before it moves into Indiana.  Channel catfish, flathead catfish, sunfish, crappie and walleye are also available.
