When you come to visit St. Augustine, you will get a taste of old and new.  This town has a rich history and is filled with cultural diversity as well as the emerging resorts, restaurants and shops that visitors love.   The beaches are nice and you won’t find the crowds here that you will find in some of the other popular vacation destinations throughout Florida.

Fishing in St. Augustine and St. Johns County is excellent. You can fish inshore, offshore and from the shore. Anglers use the St. Augustine Inlet to get out to the Atlantic Ocean. Offshore, you can catch a variety of fish such as grouper, snapper, amberjack, barracuda, cobia, mahi mahi, king mackerel, wahoo, sailfish, marlin and many others. Inshore, anglers usually target redfish, sea trout and flounder, but there are many other fish that you can catch.

Inshore Fishing


St. Augustine has some excellent inshore fishing available. The St. Augustine Inlet gets a lot of attention, but there is so much water here to fish inshore. Whether you choose to fish the inlet, rivers or the many little creeks off the rivers, there are so many places where you can have success. Anglers typically target redfish and sea trout in this area, but some of the other fish include ladyfish, sheepshead, pompano, sharks, bluefish, black drum and jack crevalle.

Nearshore Fishing


The nearshore waters around St. Augustine offer good fishing for kingfish, cobia, sharks, Spanish Mackerel, tarpon and several other species of fish. The time of year will dictate what fish will be more prevalent in the nearshore waters.

Deep Sea / Offshore Fishing


St. Augustine has some very good fishing offshore for a variety of different fish. There are some deep sea fishing charters in the area to take you out on a fishing trip. The target species will vary depending on the seasons, but some of the fish that are targeted here offshore are grouper, snapper, cobia, king mackerel, amberjack, barracuda, sharks, mahi mahi, tuna, billfish, wahoo and others.

Shore Fishing


Pier Fishing

The George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier is a long bridge for pedestrians only and the fishing can be very good from this bridge. This is a popular bridge to fish and it is accessible from Amelia Island State Park. From the pier, you can catch sheepshead, flounder, pompano, tarpon, sharks, spanish mackerel, whiting, flounder, redfish, trout, whiting, bluefish and others. The St. Johns County Ocean Pier is also another place that anglers like to fish. This pier extends into the Atlantic Ocean. You may catch many of the same species of fish here as well.


Surf Fishing

From the surf, anglers usually target pompano, redfish, spanish mackerel, black drum, sheepshead, sharks and other species of fish are also possible. There are plenty of places to fish along the beaches in St. Augustine. Fish during the tidal changes and you should be able to catch some fish from the beach in this area.

Your best bet for live baits and any tackle that you forgot to bring on your trip.
Big Retail Stores (Bass Pro / Cabela’s, Dick’s, Walmart, etc.)
These stores are the place to go if you’re looking for fishing equipment and tackle.
Grocery Stores (Winn Dixie, Publix, etc.) These are not a bad option for dead baits such as shrimp, squid & more.
