The Port St. Joe area offers good fishing for spanish mackerel from March through October. Spanish mackerel are found inshore, nearshore and offshore. Deep grass beds and reefs are good spots to target these fish. Spanish mackerel will school up, so when you find them, you have a good chance to catch a bunch of them.
How to Catch Spanish Mackerel
Spanish mackerel are a migratory fish that can be found along the Atlantic coast and in the Gulf of Mexico. Anglers usually target Spanish mackerel just off of the beaches in open water. At times, you can find them farther inshore and offshore in open water or around the reefs and wrecks.
The most common method of fishing for spanish mackerel would be trolling spoons about a half mile to a few miles off the beaches. Certain beaches do provide some surf fishing opportunities for spanish mackerel, but most anglers have better success fishing from a boat. The piers and bridges can also offer some good fishing for Spanish mackerel when these fish are moving through the area looking for bait fish. Some of the best lures to use are jigs, spoons, crankbaits and swimbaits. Live baits such as finger mullet, small menhaden, pilchards, sardines and shrimp work well for Spanish mackerel.
