Port St. Joe Sea Trout Fishing (Speckled Trout)

Port St. Joe offers some excellent fishing for speckled trout.   These fish are congregated in the St. Joseph Bay and there are lots of them to catch.  The bay has tons of grass flats in 2 to 3 feet of water that often holds schools of speckled trout.  The bay keeps the waters fairly calm most of the time, which allows anglers to get out and fish these grass flats in bay boats, smaller flats boats and even in kayaks.  A simple live bait rig with shrimp will put plenty of speckled trout in the boat.  The bigger trout in the 5 to 7 pound range are often caught on pinfish, but they will also eat shrimp or soft plastics.  Anglers also catch plenty of speckled trout near the mouth of the Port St. Joe Marina.

How to Catch Spotted Sea Trout

Spotted sea trout are mostly found inshore.  They can be found on grass flats, near bridges, piers, jetties, docks, in the surf, in bays and in tidal creeks.  Sea trout will be found inshore year-round, which is one of the reasons why they are so popular among saltwater anglers.

You can catch spotted sea trout many different ways.  The grass flats are usually the best place to target sea trout.  The tides usually dictate when and how they are going to feed around the flats.  A high tide will move fish onto the flats, while a low tide will push fish off of the flats and into the deeper water nearby.  Tidal changes are key as moving water triggers sea trout into feeding.  Spotted sea trout can be caught on shrimp, crabs and many different types of bait fish.
