Fishing Marcell, MN in the Spring

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
March 35° / 12°
April 50° / 27°
May 64° / 40°

In the spring, the lakes that are shallower and the ones with murky water will warm up faster.  Depending on when you are fishing here in the spring will dictate where the better bite is happening.  If the bigger lakes with clear water are still cold, then you are better off hitting some of the smaller lakes and those with darker water.

Once the water warms up and all the lakes are in the typical spring patterns, you have a lot of options since there is so much water up here.  Some lakes will give you the opportunity to have 30 to 50 bass days if you know what you’re doing and you fish hard all day.  On some waters, the walleye and pike will be active.  Panfish will be all over the shallows, so seek out the bays or the shorelines with warmer water temperatures and weeds or rock.  Muskie will be much shallower in the spring too.

Fishing Marcell, MN in the Summer

July 77° / 56°
August 76° / 55°

In the summer, the fishing is still very good.  On some of the smaller lakes, water temperatures will warm up and there will usually be a very solid peak bite during the mornings and evenings.  On the bigger lakes, they will follow their typical summer patterns.  Look for fish on offshore structure or along some of the shorelines with deeper water.  The deeper weed edges will almost always hold some fish too.  The topwater bite for bass anglers really picks up in early summer and continues through the early fall.

Fishing Marcell, MN in the Fall

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
September 65° / 46°
October 51° / 34°
November 33° / 19°

The fall brings some awesome fishing for many species of fish.  Many fish move back into the shallows with cooler water temperatures, however, some fish will be found deep too.  The early fall brings similar patterns that you saw in the spring, but just don’t expect to find as many fish shallow as in the spring.  As water temperatures cool down into the later part of fall, plan on finding fish deeper.  Green weeds will still hold fish.  Rocks are always a good place to look.  Offshore structure can be very productive.  The lakes that have smallmouth bass, walleye, pike or muskie will give anglers the opportunity to catch fish very late in the season as they continue to put on the weight to prepare for the winter.

Fishing Marcell, MN in the Winter (Ice Fishing)

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
December 21° / 4°
January 16° / -5°
February 23° / -2°

Ice fishing is popular on many of the lakes in the area.  The lakes that don’t have boat access will get more pressure in the winter because anglers now can get on these lakes and fish easily without a boat.  Some lakes are more pressured than others.  Some will require more work than others to get out and fish on the ice.
