Walleye

Lake Winni has been known as a good walleye fishing lake in the past and it’s still a very good lake to fish for walleye today.

Lots of Big Walleye, Less Small Walleye

Most recently, it seems like the smaller walleye aren’t here in as big of numbers as people are used to seeing on this lake, but there are plenty of bigger fish being caught.  If you know how to fish the clearer water, you can still do well here, especially for big fish, but might have a harder time catching those smaller eater-sized fish that were easier in the past.

Clear Water Tactics

The lake has been getting clearer and clearer due to the zebra mussels.  The clearer water has made the fishing tougher on some anglers, but for the ones who know how to find fish deeper, the bite has still been pretty good on this lake.

Use Fluorocarbon leaders

You may have to go to a fluorocarbon leader to get more walleye to bite in the clearer water.  For the anglers who don’t mind the pike bite-offs, they are still using very light line, but many of them are now using 6 to 8 pound fluorocarbon leaders.  If you are fishing for walleye, but want to avoid the pike bite-offs, the fluorocarbon is going to be key because you can go heavier with the leader, but still be fairly invisible to the walleye.

Tie your own fluorocarbon leaders and connect them to your main line.  Learn more about using northern pike leaders here.

Fish the Flats

The flats usually provide good fishing for walleye earlier in the year.  From late spring through parts of the summer, anglers can often find walleye cruising the flats.  Low light conditions are ideal for water less than 15 feet deep if you are fishing during the day.

Fish the Points

There are a few main points on this lake and they will attract walleye to them.  The shallower water is usually more productive in low light conditions or at night.  During the day, you want to fish the deeper water near the points.

Fish Reefs

The reefs hold plenty of walleye from summer through fall.  With the clearer water, you may be fishing 25 to 35 feet of water though once summer patterns set in.

Fish the Weeds

The weeds will hold some walleye in them as well.  Find the deeper weed edges and you’ll have better success.  With the clear water, you won’t find as many walleye up in the shallower weeds like you may have seen them when this lake was a murky water lake.

Best Baits for Walleye

Walleye eat a variety of different baits, however, when push comes to shove, it is much easier to catch them with live baits.  Minnowsnightcrawlers and leeches are definitely the best live baits for walleye.
