Panfish

Bream or Sunfish (Bluegill, Redear, Pumpkinseed, etc.)

Lake Vermilion does have plenty of bluegill and other sunfish in the lake.  Most anglers don’t target them, but you could.  The spring provides good fishing in the shallower weeds and around the docks.  Once they move shallow, they can be easy to catch.

When they move out to deeper water from summer through fall, they can be a little harder to find, but the deeper weed edges are great places to start.  They will usually school up in deeper water, so you have a good chance to catch quite a few of them if you can find them.  You will have to sort through some smaller fish to find the ones you want to keep, but there are plenty of fish big enough to keep on Lake Vermilion.

Crappie

Lake Vermilion doesn’t have a huge crappie population, but there is a fishable population here in the lake and some anglers do target them.  There are some decent-sized crappie in this lake and if you can find them schooled up during the summer and fall, you may be catch nice crappie here.  They are definitely hit or miss on this lake and most anglers don’t target them.  Some anglers that do report some good success in the spring time as these fish move into the shallows to spawn.  The weeds, wood and docks can hold some of these fish during this time of year.

Yellow Perch

Lake Vermilion has good numbers of perch and usually plenty of keeper-sized perch if you put in some time fishing here.  Most anglers run into some jumbo perch while fishing with live bait for smallmouth bass and walleye, but you can target them specifically too.  They relate to the weeds from spring through fall and they also can be found schooled up on the offshore structure from summer through fall.  Because it is such a big lake and perch are known for roaming, there are times where you may have to put in some time to find the ones that you want to keep.
