Fishing Lake Pepin in the Spring

Month Avg. Air Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
March 42° / 25°
April 58° / 37°
May 70° / 48°

The spring is a good time to fish on Lake Pepin.  There is usually a very good walleye and smallmouth bass bite in the spring.  Everything is getting going though in the spring, so it’s a great time for action and you can find a lot of fish much shallower than you will find them in the summer and fall.  A simple jig and minnow could get you bites from walleye, sauger, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, white bass, northern pike and more.

Fishing Lake Pepin in the Summer

Month Avg. Air Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
June 79° / 59°
July 84° / 63°
August 81° / 61°

The summer brings in a lot more crowds on Lake Pepin, so don’t plan on having a bunch of spots all to yourself.  You will see tournament anglers, the casual angler and plenty of pleasure boaters too.  The fish are still here and willing to bite, but you may have to fish the peak morning and evening hours to do better.  Walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike and panfish will all be found deeper.  Fish the drop-offs and you’ll have more success.

Fishing Lake Pepin in the Fall

Month Avg. Air Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
September 74° / 53°
October 61° / 41°
November 44° / 28°

In the fall, the fish will put the feed bag on, so this is a great time to fish.  Some fish will stay deeper, while some will come back in the shallows.  The pleasure boats disappear and it will be more like fishing in the spring out here.  You still may see plenty of boats on the weekends as most anglers are trying to put some walleye in the freezer before winter approaches.  Walleye, sauger, pike, white bass and smallmouth bass will all feed pretty good even as water temperatures drop into the 50s and even lower.  You may have to slow down and use a live minnow to get bites, but there are plenty of fish still eating as winter approaches.

Fishing Lake Pepin in the Winter (Ice Fishing)

Month Avg. Air Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
December 30° / 16°
January 25° / 9°
February 30° / 13°

Anglers do ice fish on Lake Pepin in the winter.  You will still find walleye, sauger, pike, perch and crappie willing to eat.  Make sure you stay away from the areas with current and just stay up to date with the current ice reports.  There is moving water on this body of water, so some areas will be safe while others will not.  Use common sense while out here.
