Northern Pike

This lake has so many islands, reefs, weedy bays, narrows and points that anglers have so many options for targeting northern pike.  If you want to target pike here, finding the weedy bays is a good place to start, however, a lot of pike will hold on the rocky structures as well on Lac Seul.  Anglers can find pike in many of the same areas that you will find walleye.

Catch Lots of Pike

Most people think of huge walleye numbers when they come to Lac Seul, but you can also catch a lot of pike too.  If you want to target pike, you may have to leave some of those large schools of walleye that you find, which is going to be tough.  When most anglers find a school of walleye, they will catch some pike, but to consistently catch pike, you need to make walleye secondary here.  Use bigger lures, cast and jig to help find the better spots for pike.  In many areas, you’ll catch a few pike then it is time to keep moving and covering water.  If you do this, it is possible to have 30 to 50 pike days no problem throughout the lake.

Catch Big Northern Pike

Lac Seul is home to some gigantic pike and most anglers do not target them.  Get out your heavy action rods and reels and cast your favorite lures in the bays, off the points and offshore structures and you’ll run into some big pike.  Fish over 40 inches are fairly common among anglers who target them and cover a decent amount of water on their trip.

Murky Water Pike Fishing

Lac Seul has murky water, so you can go heavy while pike fishing here without worrying about spooking fish.  Many anglers will use a wire leader and have no problems getting plenty of pike bites.  If you want your bait to give a more realistic look, try using a monofilament leader.  You won’t need the fluorocarbon leaders to get more pike bites on Lac Seul.

Fish the Bays

There are many bays throughout Lac Seul.  Earlier in the year, you will have much better success by fishing in the bays.  However, some bays here are so big that they will fish more like smaller lakes.  Don’t rule the big bays out during the summer and fall because there will be plenty of fish in those bays too.  You won’t find a ton of weeds throughout the lake, so when you do, fish the deeper weed lines and you’ll find some pike.

Fish the Current

There are many areas on Lac Seul that have some current.  The current will usually hold some walleye and plenty of pike will be here feeding on them as well.

Fish the Islands

There are lots of islands to fish that you easily can just focus on this pattern on your trip and do quite well.  In the spring and early summer, the bays will usually be better spots to fish for pike, but once summer patterns set in, you can target pike along the rocky shorelines of these islands and catch pike through the summer and fall.

Fish the Points

There are too many points here for you to fish them all, so focus on the ones that have access to deeper water nearby.  The wind blown points are usually more productive as well.  Walleye will move into those wind blown points with lots of rock and the pike will be there too most of the time.

Fish Reefs

If you want to target the reefs, this is a great summer and fall pattern for northern pike.  Walleye roam these reefs in large numbers all summer and fall.  Big pike can usually be found cruising these offshore structures too.

Fish the Rocks

Lac Seul is full of rocks, so plan on fishing plenty of rocks on a trip to Lac Seul.  You can target the vegetation in the bays, but you will find so much more rock that you will be making long boat runs if you just want to fish weeds.  Many anglers will catch all of their pike on a trip to Lac Seul without ever fishing any vegetation at all.

Fish the Weeds

You can target the vegetation in the bays, but you will find so much more rock that you will be making long boat runs if you just want to fish weeds.  Many anglers will catch all of their pike on a trip to Lac Seul without ever fishing any vegetation at all, so think about that before you start running all over the lake to find vegetation.  However, the parts of the lake that do hold some vegetation will be great spots to fish for pike.  Just know that there isn’t a lot of vegetation in the lake compared to the rocks.
