Fort Myers Beach is located on Estero Island in Southwest Florida. With Sanibel Island and Pine Island nearby, Fort Myers Beach helps make up one of Florida’s best vacation areas for boating, fishing, beaches and more. In Fort Myers Beach, you will find miles of white sand beaches, numerous hotels and resorts, beach shops and a pier that offers a restaurant, fishing and other entertainment.

This area has very good fishing year-round for a variety of inshore and offshore species. Most anglers have heard about this area because of its excellent tarpon run each year during the months of April, May and June. The inshore fishing is very good with Estero Bay, many other smaller bays, several passes, bridges and mangroves where you can target snook, redfish, sea trout and many other species of fish. You are also close to some outstanding fishing around the islands of Sanibel, Captiva and Pine Island.

Fort Myers Beach Inshore Fishing


Inshore, anglers have a lot of options with Estero Bay, Pine Island Sound, several passes and all of the other backwaters to fish nearby. Some of the popular fish to catch inshore are snook, redfish, sea trout and tarpon. However, there are so many more fish that you can catch here. The tides play a huge role in whether or not you will catch fish inshore. Moving water is key for most species of fish and the slack tide usually provides the worst fishing conditions for most fish. Some of the other fish that you may catch inshore are sheepshead, ladyfish, pompano and jack crevalle.

Fort Myers Beach Nearshore Fishing


The nearshore fishing is very good in the Fort Myers Beach, Florida area.  There are some nearshore wrecks that offer a variety of different fish to catch, but most of the fish that anglers will target will be grouper, snapper, kingfish, cobia, permit, snook and goliath grouper.  The time of year will dictate what fish will be more prevalent, but you can catch fish nearshore year-round in this area.


Fort Myers Beach Deep Sea / Offshore Fishing


There are some great pieces of structure to fish offshore in this area. The target species will vary depending on the seasons, but this area will provide plenty of action year-round. Many of the fishing charters will target grouper, snapper, cobia, king mackerel, permit, amberjack and goliath grouper. Some other fish that are targeted offshore are barracuda, bonito, sharks and others.

Pier Fishing

The Fort Myers Beach, Florida area offers shore anglers many options.  For the pier anglers, try fishing the Fort Myers Beach Fishing Pier or the pier under Matanzas Bridge.  From the piers, anglers may catch snook, mangrove snapper, sheepshead, flounder, pompano, cobia, tarpon, sharks, kingfish, Spanish mackerel and others.


Surf Fishing

There are plenty of places to fish off of the beaches, although, this area is a very popular tourist destination, so you may not be able to fish in some areas during the day.  Early morning may be your best option if you want to fish the beaches during the peak travel season.  Anglers catch a lot of fish from the surf, however, whiting, pompano and snook are some of the most popular fish to target from the surf.  You may also catch Spanish mackerel, black drum, flounder, sheepshead, sharks and other species of fish too.
