Daytona Beach is a very popular vacation destination for a variety of people. College students line the beaches, restaurants and shops during their spring break every year. There is also a bike week that attracts thousands of motorcycles to the area. Families also love coming to Daytona Beach. Many families will come to Florida to visit Orlando, but they make it over to the beach for a day or two. The area is loaded with gift shops, fast food restaurants, and many different types of lodging. The beaches are beautiful, although cars are allowed to drive on the beach.  It is definitely unique and it adds to the appeal of Daytona Beach for some people, while others find it less appealing.

Fishing seems to be secondary in the Daytona Beach area, but there is definitely some good fishing here with a couple of piers nearby and several fishing charters that can take you out for a variety of species.  Inshore fishing is popular out of the Indian River Lagoon.  Ponce Inlet is located just south of Daytona Beach and this area is popular for fishing. You can fish the inlet from the jetty or from a boat.  Some anglers fish the river, while others use the inlet to access the Atlantic Ocean to fish for a variety of fish in offshore waters. The Sunglow Fishing Pier is another place that is popular among anglers.  The fishing pier gives anglers the opportunity to fish some deeper water for a variety of different fish. Offshore, anglers can catch a variety of fish depending on the time of year.

Daytona Beach Inshore Fishing


The inshore waters around Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach give anglers an opportunity to catch a variety of fish. Anglers typically target redfish and sea trout in this area, but some of the other fish inlude ladyfish, sheepshead, pompano, sharks, bluefish, black drum, tarpon and jack crevalle. Snook are even possible in this area during the warmer months of the year, although, it’s nothing like it is in the southern parts of Florida. The tides play a huge role in whether or not you will catch fish inshore. Moving water is key for most species of fish and the slack tide usually provides the worst fishing conditions for most fish.

 Nearshore Fishing


The nearshore waters around Daytona Beach can provide some good fishing for many different types of fish. Some of the popular fish that are caught nearshore are kingfish, cobia, sharks, Spanish Mackerel, tarpon and several other species of fish. The time of year will dictate what fish will be more prevalent in the nearshore waters.


Daytona Beach Deep Sea / Offshore Fishing


The Daytona Beach area is home to some excellent offshore fishing. There are many boats that head out of New Smyrna Beach (just south of Daytona Beach) to fish for many different fish offshore. If you are looking for a deep sea fishing charter, you will have plenty of options in this area. The target species will vary depending on the seasons, but some of the fish that are targeted here offshore are grouper, snapper, cobia, king mackerel, amberjack, barracuda, sharks, mahi mahi, tuna, billfish, wahoo and others.

Daytona Beach Shore Fishing


Pier Fishing

The Daytona Beach area has a couple of fishing piers, an inlet with some jetty fishing and miles of beaches to fish from the surf. If you want to fish off of a pier, try the Sunglow Fishing Pier or the Daytona Beach Fishing Pier. From the pier, you may catch sheepshead, flounder, pompano, tarpon, sharks, Spanish mackerel, whiting, flounder, redfish, trout, whiting, bluefish and others.


Surf Fishing

At Ponce Inlet, anglers can also fish from shore and this inlet is known for its excellent fishing during the tidal changes. From the surf, anglers usually target pompano, redfish, Spanish mackerel, black drum, sheepshead, sharks, but other species of fish are also possible. There are plenty of places to fish along the beaches in the Daytona Beach area. During the peak travel season, it may be tough to fish the crowded beaches during the day time, but there should always be a place to fish if you get out there early in the morning. Fish during the tidal changes and you should be able to catch some fish from the beach in this area.
