Casting spoons are meant for casting.  While you can jig them and troll them, there are more specific spoons made for each of these situations.  The spoons made for casting tend to be the most productive if you are planning on using a spoon to cast and wind in with a somewhat steady retrieve.  Casting spoons have excellent action that simulate baitfish and they drive predator fish nuts.  Bigger fish such as bass, northern pike, muskie, salmon and trout will all bite a casting spoon.

Tackle Recommendations

Rod, Reel & Line

Casting Spoons are usually fished with a baitcaster with heavier line and a heavier rod, however, spinning gear works fine too for most situations where you’re targeting bass, trout and panfish.  If you’re targeting bigger fish such as northern pike or salmon, going with heavier gear is highly recommended.  Baitcasters with line from 20 to 40 pound line may be necessary to haul in some of the big fish that will eat a spoon.
