Walleye


The Ignace area has plenty of good walleye lakes.  Many of the lakes that offer good walleye fishing will be smaller, portage lakes, so many anglers never fish these waters.  The main lakes here are good too though.  The English River system has very good walleye fishing and there are so many lakes to fish here that are connected to that system.  Take a look below to learn more about the walleye lakes in the area.


Agimak Lake


Agimak Lake is a decent-sized lake with a nice swimming beach right in town.  It has several islands, bays, points and channels that provide good fishing for walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike and perch.


Barrel Lake


Barrel Lake is a decent-sized lake with plenty of areas to fish even when on windy days.  With 2 rivers flowing into this lake, you get a lot of fresh oxygen and lots of bait fish.  Walleye are the primary species of fish here as anglers catch good numbers of them with some big fish too.  Smallmouth bass and northern pike are also here in good numbers with some big fish.  Smallmouth bass are found around the rocky shoals and points that lead out to deeper water.  You can find some bass around the weed edges too.


Indian Lake


Indian Lake is a good-sized lake with lots of bays, points and some islands too.  There is a variety of fish on Indian Lake, however, walleye and northern pike are the primary species of fish.  You may also catch perch, smallmouth bass, lake trout and whitefish.


Kukukus Lake


Kukukus is large lake with lots of productive water to fish.  Walleye, northern pike and perch are here and big fish are not uncommon either.  Inflowing streams hold a lot of walleye and pike early in the year with the offshore structure holding a lot of fish during the summer and fall.  There are plenty of weedy bays for pike fishing, but the islands and points will hold lots of pike too.


Paguchi Lake


Paguchi Lake is like 3 lakes in one and they all produce good fishing for northern pike.  Paguchi Lake is known for its good lake trout fishing.  The west end of the lake provides more open water and anglers report good fishing for trout here.  Walleye round out the fishery here and there are some very big walleye in the lake.


Sandbar Lake Provincial Park


This park is known for its sandy beach with gently sloping swim area, which is great for kids.  Sandbar Lake provides good fishing for northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass and perch.  The park is a starting point for canoeists that are seeking some challenging routes with good fishing for northern pike, walleye and smallmouth bass in the area lakes.

Sowden Lake


Sowden Lake is part of the famous English River system.  This river system provides excellent fishing for walleye, northern pike and smallmouth bass and it is no different on Sowden Lake.  Anglers can catch good numbers of fish here.  You have plenty of bays and points to fish with some islands and good deep water spots too.


Best Baits for Walleye


Walleye eat a variety of different baits, however, when push comes to shove, it is much easier to catch them with live baits.  Minnowsnightcrawlers and leeches are definitely the best live baits for walleye.

While most anglers will just use live baits, many anglers will also target walleye with lures as well.  Crankbaits and soft plastics are the best lures for walleye, however, you can catch walleye with a variety of different lures.
