Smallmouth Bass


Smallmouth bass are secondary here, but they are available in many of the lakes.  You won’t always catch them in huge numbers here, but there are plenty of lakes with good populations of smallmouth bass and some big bass too.


Agimak Lake


Agimak Lake is a decent-sized lake with a nice swimming beach right in town.  It has several islands, bays, points and channels that provide good fishing for walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike and perch.


Barrel Lake


Barrel Lake is a decent-sized lake with plenty of areas to fish even when on windy days.  With 2 rivers flowing into this lake, you get a lot of fresh oxygen and lots of bait fish.  Walleye are the primary species of fish here as anglers catch good numbers of them with some big fish too.  Smallmouth bass and northern pike are also here in good numbers with some big fish.  Smallmouth bass are found around the rocky shoals and points that lead out to deeper water.  You can find some bass around the weed edges too.


Indian Lake


Indian Lake is a good-sized lake with lots of bays, points and some islands too.  There is a variety of fish on Indian Lake, however, walleye and northern pike are the primary species of fish.  You may also catch perch, smallmouth bass, lake trout and whitefish.


Mameigwess Lake


Mameigwess Lake has deep water and it is known as a good lake trout lake.  Most anglers fish this lake for lake trout, but there are some big northern pike here too with smallmouth bass, perch and brook trout rounding out the fishery.


Sandbar Lake Provincial Park


This park is known for its sandy beach with gently sloping swim area, which is great for kids.  Sandbar Lake provides good fishing for northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass and perch.  The park is a starting point for canoeists that are seeking some challenging routes with good fishing for northern pike, walleye and smallmouth bass in the area lakes.

Sowden Lake


Sowden Lake is part of the famous English River system.  This river system provides excellent fishing for walleye, northern pike and smallmouth bass and it is no different on Sowden Lake.  Anglers can catch good numbers of fish here.  You have plenty of bays and points to fish with some islands and good deep water spots too.


Best Baits for Smallmouth Bass


Smallmouth bass will eat a variety of different baits.  Minnows, nightcrawlers and leeches are definitely the best live baits for smallmouth bass.

When it comes to artificial lures, you have lots of options.  Soft plastic crayfish, twin tail grubs, worms and minnow baits are very effective.  Hard baits such as  crankbaits, jerkbaits and spinners also work great.
