Fishing with Clam Worms as Bait

Fishing with Live Bait & Natural Baits

Clam worms, often referred to as ragworms or sandworms, are reddish brown with 4 eyes, 2 sensory feelers and 8 tentacles.  You can find clam worms at bait and tackle shops.  Some of the species of fish that will eat a clam worm are flounder, sea trout, blackfish, striped bass, porgy, whiting, croakers, rockfish and surf perch.

How to Catch Clam Worms

You can find clam worms in the sand or mud.  They feed on algae and other invertebrates in these areas.  People will usually catch them on the beaches by finding them first, then baiting them up with shrimp or other types of fish.  It’s pretty cool to see and there are several videos on youtube where you can see how it is done.

Using Clam Worms as Bait

The clam worms can get quite large, so you can use them as a whole worm or cut them into pieces.  Choose to use pieces or the entire worm based on the size of the worm and the fish you are targeting.  Bigger fish will like bigger offerings while smaller fish will only need a piece of bait to trick them into biting.  Rig them on your favorite bottom rig and you’re good to go.
