Welcome to our Challis, Idaho Fishing Home Page
Challis is a small town in central Idaho. This town isn’t as popular as some of the other areas that we covered in Idaho, but you will find some of the same adventures in Challis that you find in other towns. The Salmon River offers excellent fishing and whitewater rafting adventures. Steelhead fishing is good on the Salmon River as well as they migrate from the Pacific from the fall through the spring.
Primary Species of Fish
Steelhead, Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout & Brook Trout
The steelhead migration here from fall through the spring is what draws many anglers to this area to fish. You can catch other species of trout as well, but the steelhead get the most attention once they arrive into this stretch of the Salmon River. Cutthroat trout and rainbow trout are also available in the Salmon River and the area tributaries. Fish the mountain lakes for rainbow trout, cutthroat trout and brook trout.
Salmon River
The Salmon River has crystal, clear waters and it is home to some fantastic fishing for a variety of trout such as rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout. Anglers also get a shot at steelhead here during their annual spawning migration which runs from fall through the spring. There are also sockeye salmon, chinook salmon and bull trout here too, but due to them being endangered in these waters, there are some regulations against fishing for them here to help them build up their populations again.
High Mountain Lakes
There are some pristine, high mountain lakes in the area. They take a little bit of effort to get to, but many of these lakes will also offer good fishing for a variety of trout. Fish the mountain lakes for rainbow trout, cutthroat trout and brook trout.
